GREEN-IT: Green initiative for energy efficient eco-products in the contruction industry
GREEN-IT aims to introduce energy labelling for European construction building products and accelerate the EU market transformation towards regulated Energy Performance of Buildings and improved “eco-designed†Energy-Using Products.
At the moment only environmental labelling (for building products) is applied in just a few EU countries, and in an unharmonised fashion. The project aims to pilot implement energy labelling of EU manufactured and marketed building products with customised approaches according to each participating country’s needs. With the EU's industry involved in the project, voluntary mechanisms and product labelling has been used as a means to promote the best practices in construction products manufacturing. This will expectedly motivate the sector to further comply with the new Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD).
The pilot label is primarily based on thermal performance criteria and building operational energy within the EPBD needs; EU building products will be assessed, benchmarked and further labelled based on their contribution to the overall building performance. It remains to be seen whether the unique labelling criteria and requirements for each country will bring to light and bridge the diversity that characterises product labelling procedures in the EU.
